Harriet Tubman was an african american woman that had escaped slavery during the civil war, to become an abolitionist. Born in 1820, she escaped slavery at the age of 29. Born Araminta Harriet Ross, she was born in Dorchester County, Maryland.

Harriet Tubman had lived under slavery for many years before she finally stood up against her ruler. After her family was torn apart from their owner selling her sisters, she had had enough. she stood up against him and ran away, with her brothers and father. she had seen the ways that slave owners had treated their "slaves" which she did not think was fair, so she stood up and became the "underground railroad conductor." Violence was an everyday thing for her family while they were on the plantations.
